While most beginners will not even know what they need, surfers at any level will find that showing up to surf without being unprepared can quickly turn excitement into frustration. After all, having the right surfing essentials not only increases safety and confidence but also helps you progress. As experienced surf instructors, we know how much proper gear matters regardless of skill level. Use a checklist!

If you have ever been to the beach, excited to surf, only to realize that you forgot something important, then you know the disappointment that can arise. This is amplified if the conditions are good and the clock is ticking. If you are new to the sport, maybe you aren’t even sure what you need.

To call yourself a surfer means having all the essentials, regardless of your skill level. Otherwise, it will dampen the excitement and slow your progress. Safety can become an issue, and your confidence may tank.

As surf instructors, we have worked with surfers of all ages and experiences. And we understand just how much having the right gear makes all the difference. So, to keep the fun flowing, we have put together a surfing essentials checklist for all skill levels. Check it out.

Every Surfer Needs These Core Surfing Essentials

It doesn’t matter whether you have been surfing for a few days or a lifetime; there are some non-negotiables that you should always have with you. Consider them the basics before stepping into the water.

Surfboard

This is a no-brainer. How else would you intend to surf? It is your foundation. The good thing is that surfboards can be matched to your skill level. For instance, beginners tend to do well with longer, wider, and thicker soft-boards as they provide a bit more stability and make it easier to paddle. More advanced surfers may ride shorter boards for maneuverability.

If you are new to surfing, don’t try to guess which board is right for you. Learning how to surf using the wrong surfboard will delay your progress. At Malibu Makos, we provide the surfboards so you can get a deeper understanding of what you need before you invest in your own.

Leash

A leash is what keeps your surfboard connected to you—no runaway boards allowed. This keeps you and others safe and also deters you from having to swim after your board.

The leash length should match your board length.

Wax

Wax will give you grip so that your feet do not slide on the board. This makes it easier to stand up. Bear in mind that water temperature matters, so you will want to have the correct wax before you head out.

Wetsuits and Rash Guards

While it is not a requirement, a wetsuit can extend your time in the water when the temperatures are low. Wearing one in Malibu means that surfing is a year-round sport, as it will keep you warm in the cooler months

Rash guards are there to protect against board rash and sunburn when the UV rays are peaking. These are commonly used during the summer months.

Additional Surfing Essentials for Beginners

If you are just learning how to surf, you are going to need a few things that will keep you comfortable and safe as you build confidence on your board and in the water.

Reef-Safe Sunscreen

If you aren’t used to being in the water, you may be surprised how quickly the sun exposure can sneak up on you. The breeze and cool water can make it difficult to even feel the sun’s rays. Be sure to grab some reef-safe sunscreen and apply it as instructed. This will keep you and the ocean safe.

Surf Lessons

Of course, surf lessons with expert instructors are especially important for new surfers. There is a lot to learn, and it is not something you will learn yourself. Working with a skilled instructor, you can stay safe, accelerate your progress, and feel good about having the right foundation in the sport.

Essentials for Intermediate Surfers

When you’re catching waves consistently and feeling a little more in sync with the ocean, your needs will start to evolve, aside from the essentials. You will find that there are things that

will elevate your abilities by refining your technique. Let’s take a look.

Extra Wax and a Backup Leash

During this time, you will likely be spending more time in the water. There is a greater chance that water conditions will be varied with more intense waves. Having extra wax and a backup leash is always a wise decision—just in case

A Tide App

More experienced surfers know how to read the ocean. Understanding tides, swell direction, and wind is crucial for those surfing different breaks. Having this knowledge at your fingertips is just as important as your board and wetsuit.

Essentials for Advanced Surfers

Finally, advanced surfers need it all. They strive to match their performance to the conditions so they can yield the best result.

Boards

Yes, that is boards–plural. Any advanced surfer knows that each kind of surf conditions requires a special board.  And having them available makes it easy to make the most of your surf sesh. Use a surf watch or app to check conditions or simply monitor them yourself. Then, use the proper board.

High-Performance Fins

Having a fin setup affects your speed, control, and maneuverability. Advanced surfers like to experiment with different sizes and materials to see how dramatically it works. You will find what works best for you.

The Right Essentials Matter

Surfing is not about having the fanciest gear or the latest fashion, but rather about having the right essentials for where you are on your journey. Whether you are paddling out for the first time or refining your ride, being prepared is the key to success.

At Malibu Makos, our experienced surf instructors not only provide personalized lessons and expert guidance, but they also provide some of the basics to help get you started, such as top-of-the-line soft surfboards and wetsuits.
